Bunkers del Carmel

One of Barcelona’s best kept secrets is the Bunkers del Carmel: a hidden gem nestled on the Turó de la Rovira with the best panoramic view of the city. Relatively unknown to most tourists, these Spanish Civil War bunkers offer a place of peaceful refuge when needing a break from city life.

There are several methods of getting to the bunkers — the most convenient for tourists being by public transportation or by foot. The hike takes approximately one hour and 20 minutes from the Gothic Quarter and is a nice, picturesque journey that will wind you through some of Barcelona’s famous, historic districts (El Born, Eixample, and Gracia). Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes as there are some steep portions as you make your way up the hill. If you prefer the faster route, there are several bus lines that will drop you off fairly close to the viewpoint: lines 24, V17, 92, and 119.

Locals and tourists alike can be found at the bunkers enjoying a picnic during sunset with friends and loved ones. Gather a group of new hostel friends, your camera, some Catalan vino, and experience a bit of offbeat Barcelona.
